What is a hashtag?

Hashtags are becoming increasingly popular, they are used continuously on a variety of social media platforms as well as in daily conversations so if you are not down so to speak with this lingo then luckily for you in this article you will find out all that you need to know to ensure you understand what they are and how to use them.

Firstly, anyone can create a hashtag and you can do this by placing the number sign or pound sign # this sign is then placed in front of a word or phrase of your choosing for example #thelittlestveganblog your hashtag can include numbers, symbols or emojis, the more unique and individual you make the hashtag the better. We will discuss why a little later on.

Why use hashtags?

One massive reason to use hashtags is because when we are using them on Instagram  a post that has at least one hashtag is 12.6% more likely to get more engagement with viewers compared to a post that has no hashtags. Your hashtags allow you to give more inspiration and understanding of what you are trying to promote to your audience.

So thinking about your hashtags and their relevance to you is important, you must ensure that your hashtags are relevant to what you are you are trying to sell, promote, show Otherwise they are a waste of time hashtags allow people to see the things that they are interested in as well, so in effect it acts like a filter, which is useful for both the viewer and the creator .

Which hashtag?

Now, you may think well I should use the most popular and most followed hashtag to ensure that I get more followers or traffic to my instagram, pinterest, twitter or website.

However, this is not the case as the popular hashtags like #vegan even though they may show what you like and be filtered for your audience, which I think initially is great. You eventually need to make your product, site more niche and specific to you.

How do you use hashtags effectively?

First, ensure that you keep your hashtags simple and specific to you. Then, add a few hashtags that are currently trending so you can guarantee that a fair amount of people are going to be noticing it. Next, keep using unique and trending hashtags on various social media platforms.

Try not to overuse the hashtags keep them fresh and key and up-to-date with the trends and your brand. Finally, a key one think about searching your hashtag before you add it to your image or website to ensure that it has the right content and audience that you are looking for.

Why are hashtags important?

As previously mentioned hashtags are important to create a social media platform around what you are trying to promote, especially if you are trying to use it for business. They add an identity and a pull of like minded people to look at/research the things that they enjoy allowing people to keep updated with key issues and trends.

What is a hashtag and how does it work?

The exact definition of what a hashtag is  – A word or phrase preceded by a hash mark (#), used within a message to identify a keyword or topic of interest and facilitate a search for it. Then when somebody puts a hashtag with their post it is able to be sorted by the social network and then can be easily accessed and found by other people searching the site of web.

What is the point of a hashtag?

When anyone uses a hashtag it draws attention to it. It is then able to be organized and promoted. Hashtags originally came for twitter where people followed specific hashtags making it easier to follow others and a conversation that they were interested in and to contribute their thoughts.

How many hashtags on Instagram?

As I have previously mentioned you can have up to 30 hashtags on Instagram on a regular post. You can only have up to ten hashtags on a story. You will be unable to publish your story or post if you put more than this on it. It may post but with none of your hashtags.

Which Instagram hashtags get the most likes?

  • #love.
  • #instagood.
  • #photooftheday.
  • #fashion.
  • #beautiful.
  • #happy.
  • #cute.
  • #tbt.

Where to start?

Once you have decided your genre and niche then you can target your specific audience with key hashtags and look into the ones that are trending/popular for your post. You can then apply a mix of trending and unique to add your own style to your social media platform.

Ensure that you keep your hashtags organized as some will work better for some of your posts than others. Also to keep your brand niche, think about how to narrow your hashtags therefore keeping them unique and specific to you and your brand.
